Megavalanche 2012 update

22/11/2011

We have used our local knowledge and contacts to get what we think is the best bike friendly hotel accommodation for the 2012 Megavalanche. We have teamed up with the Hotel Beausoliel just 10 seconds (YES 10 SECONDS bike ride !) from the main DMC lift station that takes you to the Megavalanche Race and Qualifier Start line and also access to all the other fantastic Alpe d’Huez trails.

Mountain of Hell 2012 dates announced

13/10/2011

The Mountain of Hell 2012 dates have been announced for the weekend of 13-15th July 2012. We have hotel accommodation in Les Deux Alpes itself for the event. More info can be found here. Based on these dates and other events going on in the area (such as La Marmotte Sportive and the Alpe d’Huez Triathlon) it suggests that the Megavalanche will take place on the weekend of the 21st and 22nd July 2012. This is at time of writing yet to be confirmed.

Couple of returning guests in last week on our mountainbike week. They bought full face helmets especially to try out the Megavalanche route. I think said full face helmets will be going on ebay in a few weeks !

New route for Megavalanche qualifying 2011 ?

5/07/2011

It appears that there is a new route for the Megavalanche Qualifying this year down to the village of Huez. More info as we get it. They certainly have been cutting a new MTB trail down the side of the mountain over the last couple of weeks. Looking forward to riding it when it is fully open

Quick ride down the middle section of Megavalanche route

14/05/2011

I cycled up to middle section of the Megavalanche trail yesterday ( as the lifts are not running its a steep doubletrack road) and mountain biked back to our base in Bourg d’Oisans. The MTB team in Alpe d’Huez are busy building and maintaining the trails so parts of it were un rideable. Don’t expect much snow on the Glacier for 2011!

My GPS route can be found here

La Boucle d’Allemont

11/04/2011

Another big ride today starting from our base in Bourg d’Oisans and cycling out towards Allemont and then the small village of Rivier d’Allemont. The Climb up to Rivier d’Allemont is a mixture of road and rough firetrack following the river and valley. After Rivier d’Allemont it ramps up on first double track and then singletrack to a point at about 1300m above sea level. After this point its a hike a bike section to 1500 metres including 2 white water crossings. From this point its tight technical switchback singletrack all the way back down to the Allemont dam. Big day out – lots of climbing with a fantastic descent at the end, and good to be out of the Alpe d’Huez and Les Deux Alpes bike park.

MTBing with Ride Sierra Nevada

22/01/2011

I was in Andalucia southern spain last week sorting out some road cycling weeks staying with Shaun and Csilla at www.ridesierranevada.com . On the last day of my stay Shaun and Csilla took me on a nez mountain bike trail they have discovered just north of their accommodation. The singletrack trail down the mountain was too good to stop to take photos but I did take a couple on the climb up to give some idea of the scale. Both Shaun and Csilla have now booked to come do the Megavalanche with us next year.
