Derby de la Morte – Alternative Megavalanche and Mountain of Hell Race in the Oisans

Following on from the great article in Dirt Magazine in february 2010 there is yet another mass start descent race in the same style as the areas already famous Megavalanche and Mountain of Hell. The french are great at these mass start marathon descents and this one starts at 1900 metres on yet another Oisans local ski / mountainbike resort of the Alpe de Grande Serre and descends 1400 metres over 23km. The race will be in its second year in 2010 and takes place at the begining of September. More information on the event can be found here. The Mountain of Hell in Les Deux Alpes this year takes place between the 16th-18th July 2010.

Our main accommodation out our base in Bourg d’Oisans for this week has now sold out. We have however linked up with our friends in the Hotel La Meije right in the centre of Les Deux Alpes, and a minutes ride from the main lift station, to offer flexible bed and breakfast hotel accommodation.

With a choice of rooms, from doubles and twins to rooms that sleep three or four we are sure we can find a combination to suit you or your group. The hotel also has secure bike storage, a comfortable bar, outdoor Jacuzzi and terrace for relaxing after the day’s activities and free WIFI access.

Megavalanche Practice on the Ice

With some relatively warm temperatures in Bourg d’Oisans this new year I decided to go for a new years ride to Venosc at the bottom of Les Deux Alpes on my xc bike. The trail was pretty good compared to last year when i attempted it with only small patches of ice. I used the ice and rode it flat out as it is good preperation for riding the top section of the Megavalanche over the glacier.

If you fancy the Mega but want to combine it with some other riding as well then we tackle the course on our week long stays in August.

Oulles 84 switchbacks mountain bike video – Alpe d’Huez

The guys at bigfoot have uploaded another video from their mountain bike holiday of the 84 switchbacks of oulles. This is a mega technical descent with very steep drops off to the side. Its away from the Alpe d’Huez and Les Deux Alpes bike parks so there is no uplift but a road climb up. One great thing is that it will drop you all the way back in to Bourg d’Oisans for lunch !

Grenoble VTT Race

I attended my first VTT (MTB) race last weekend in Grenoble. It was a pretty low key affair and tailored for families. My seven year old son entered his first downhill, xc and trials race and finished a respectable 5th out of about 30 kids in his age group.

I a long with a friend enterd the 2 hour relay XC race. I knew I was in trouble when I saw the short course about 10 mins per lap the 3 short sharp climbs (nothing like we are used to in Alpe d’Huez) and the 20 or so cyclo cross bikes !

The event took place next to the cycling clubs velodrome so each lap involved a quick sprint on the velodrome before handing over to your coleague to do a lap. It was hard going with short recovery times with lung busting short climbs. The great thing though about french events is there is always loads of food to eat.

For the record I believe we were 27th out of quite a few more ?!

The organisers of the Mondial du VTT over at Les Deux Alpes have announced their dates for 2010. This is traditionally the season opener in the area with the lifts all starting up for the summer. Get some great riding in from our base and enter some of the XC/ downhill competetions on offer as well as try out the latest 2010 mountain bike models. We are also offering flexible bed and breakfast stay in the middle of Les Deux Alpes for this event

Les Deux Alpes Bike Park

The last day of bigfoots week long adventure saw us take on the Les Deux Alpes bike park and its many trails. The day started with a lift from 900 metres in Venosc all the way to the glacier at 3300 metres where the Mountain of Hell race starts each year. After a ton of descending on sweet but rocky singletrack we caught another lift up and then another and then another. The day ended with the big red rated descent back to Venosc for the short van trip home and a couple of beers in Bourg d’Oisans

Day 5 Oulles and Alpe d’Huez (again!) with bigfoot mbc

Day 5 started with a bit of a road climb up to the mythical trail of Oulles with its mythical 84 switchback back down to Bourg d’Oisans. We all struggled down the trail which drops off a very steep wooded mountainside. When you look back at the end of the descent you can not quite believe that there is a path down the mountainside. After a quick lunch stop back at our base in Bourg d’Oisans the guys asked if they could do some of the trails (that we did on tuesday) from Alpe d’Huez to Villard Reculas and then down to Bourg d’Oisans again. We were happy to oblige and after loading our bikes on the local bus service we were on our way for an excellent afternoon of over 1000m of vertical descending on very dusty trails.

Mega qualifier and race course – day 3 Bigfoot MBC holiday

Today 3 of the bigfooters tackled the top section of the Megavalanche trail (which can be accessed throughout July and August) while the other two hired some of our bikes and climbed the mythical Alpe d’Huez 21 road bends. We met in Alpe d’Huez at the main chairlift where the bike park is and a few of them did some of the drops and jumps. After lunch (and general fettling , brakes , broken rear mech hanger etc) we traversed a round the mountain and picked up the Megavalanche qualifier and then finally the bottom part of the Megavalanche race course (still with avalanche trophy taped out). We finished with a cross country ride back to our base in Bourg d’Oisans.

Day 2 of the bigfoot mtb club week saw us tumble down the side of Alpe d’Huez all the way back to Bourg d’Oisans with 2000m of vertical descent on our lift assisted day. The day included technical rocky singletrack,th epurpose built downhill run, 2 natural rocky singletrack switchback trails, 1 fast flowing singletrack trail and finally my favourite trail from Villard Reculas down to Bourg d’Oisans – a superfast switchback singletrack wooded trail.

A few photos of the guys from Bigfoot MBC who are staying with us this week on a lift assisted cross coutry week in Les Deux Alpes and Alpe d’Huez. Today we did a climb up the black cross country run from 1650m 2400 m. We then took 3 big runs down (graded blue,green and then red) down to 900. From venosc we traversed back to our base in Bourg d’Oisans (770m).

You can now download the 2009 entry form from our website. We are also offering accommodation in our chalet for the event on both a week long stay and also a long weekend stay. Joining us will be 4 chaps from Dirt Magazine in the UK.

For those of you that don’t know the Mountain of Hell – then it is held the weekend after the Megavalanche in Alpe d’Huez just across the valley in Les Deux Alpes and like the Megavalanche it starts high up on the glacier and tumbles down 30 KM of downhill to Venosc.

Megavalanche week will be from the 6th to 13th July 2009. Due to demand we have taken on an additional chalet.

We now have 3 options available for the Mega week all based in Alpe d’Huez:

Entry to the event is not included.

OPTION 1. We have luxury 4 star chalets in Alpe d’Huez for the event

Price £550 GBP (600 Euros) per person or combined cost for Megavalanche and Mountain of Hell/ Dirt Magazine Week £900 GBP (970 Euros)
Seven night accommodation

Living in the area gives me a great opportunity to look at the Megavalanche slope all year round (when the lifts are open that is). Anyway this weekend I was up at the start on Pic Blanc with my snowboard tackling the black run down and over the glacier. It still amazes me that 1500 odd bikes race down the slope – heres looking forward to July !.

Just so you know we have megavalanche accommodation in Alpe d’Huez and Bourg d’Oisans this year – although our main house where we operate our mountain bike holidays is now full for the week.
